SONG FOR ALICE MILLIGAN
I stood today at a grass-grown grave by the murmuring river side
And I prayed for all the true and brave who, for Ireland’s sake, had died.
And I prayed for one, who, in this clay, has found her earthly rest.
I prayed for Alice Milligan, who loved Ireland the best.
These are the words inscribed upon the stone that marks her grave
And stirs the heart of everyone, except the fool or knave.
True to her Faith in life and death, her spirit stood the test.
Her path she drawed and under God loved Ireland the best.
Here she sleeps her last long sleep mixt those who were her own
Green her memory we shall keep, forever in Tyrone.
Her stainless soul has found its goal and gained eternal rest
And will surely meet with others who loved Ireland the best.
