INDECISION
I’m an Irishman born, from County Tyrone.
You know that it’s one of the Six.
The place of my birth I would never disown
Bur I’m just in a bit of a fix.
I love Mother Eireann, as well, I’ll allow
As a man from the South or the West
But I’m living on Public Assistance just now
And I love Mother England the best.
Now some fellows say that I ought to be shot
And dumped in some handy boghole
But a bob or two extra can mean quite a lot
To a fellow who’s drawin’ the Dole.
I like DeValera – a glorious chap,
Costello, MacBride and the rest,
But a laddie called Butler’s * the man in the gap
And I like Mr. Butler the best.
I don’t want Partition, no more than the next
I would like to be one of the “ Boys ”
But preaching sedition was never my text
And batons are dangerous toys.
I would part with the Border, and not shed a tear,
And yet – if it came to the test –
The family allowance is more over here
And I love Mother England the best.
So I just Carry on, and I’ll try to have sense
Tho’ my neighbour may be in the “ Dumps “
I think that it’s safer to sit on the fence
‘Till we see how the ‘pussycat’ jumps.
So – Ireland – I love you, Acushla Machree,
Emerald Gem of the West
But sometimes of the flesh-pots get whisperin’ to me
And I love Mother England the best.
